Plastering in Penwortham

Penwortham's housing changes as you climb away from the river. Lower Penwortham, nearest the Ribble and the bridges into Preston, is mostly 1930s semis with bay windows, many of them brick below and rendered or dashed above. Up in Higher Penwortham there are solid detached houses and a good number of bungalows, and out along Liverpool Road towards Hutton the estates get newer. These are well-kept streets where the state of a front elevation gets noticed, and much of the render we replace here is being replaced for how it looks as much as for what it lets in.

The weather is gentler here than on the seafront, but not by much when the south-westerlies push rain up the Ribble. Elevations facing the prevailing wind take the brunt of it, and interwar cement render has no give: it cracks with the seasons, the cracks take on water and winter frost opens them up. Painted finishes fade and flake, old dash goes grey and loosens its grip, and the solid-walled houses in the older parts hold the cold. That mix of ageing finishes and owners who care what the place looks like is why silicone re-renders and insulated render are our most quoted jobs in Penwortham.
