Plastering for Garstang Homes

Garstang makes good use of the plastering side of the firm. The older cottages in the town centre have walls that were never flat to begin with, and barn conversions out towards Churchtown often need whole rooms plasterboarded and skimmed from scratch. We handle internal and external plastering, all from the same team.

That covers fresh skimming over tired ceilings, plasterboarding for extensions and conversions, and patching where old plaster has come away from stone walls. Because we do the outside of the house as well, we can spot when an internal damp patch is really a render problem, and sort both under one quote.

What We See on Garstang Walls

  • Old plaster blown off solid stone walls in the cottages around the town centre
  • Damp staining on internal walls that traces back to failed render outside
  • Barn conversions needing full plasterboarding and skimming to a modern finish
  • Ceilings with years of cracking that want overboarding rather than another patch
  • Uneven period walls that need dubbing out before a skim will sit flat

One team for plaster and render saves Garstang homeowners chasing two trades. A lot of the internal damp we see out here starts on the outside of the wall, so having a plasterer who understands both sides of it counts for a lot.

Where We Cover in Garstang

Garstang changes character street by street. The town centre and the streets off the high street have stone cottages and older solid-wall properties, some of them well over a hundred years old. Around the edges you've got modern estates at Catterall and Bonds, mostly cavity-wall brick from the last few decades. Then out towards Churchtown and Great Eccleston it turns rural fast: farmhouses, barn conversions and detached houses sat on their own in open country.

Out here the walls face a different enemy to the coast. There's no salt spray, but the town sits in open farmland along the Wyre and the wind carries rain straight across it, especially onto west-facing walls with nothing to shelter them. Exposed rural properties take a hammering through winter, and frost bites harder inland than it does by the sea. Old cement render and tired roughcast on houses like these tends to crack, hold water and slowly blow, and that's most of what we get called out to around Garstang.

We work right across Garstang, including Catterall, Bonds and Churchtown, and out into the surrounding towns and villages.

Plastering Questions

It depends on the state of the walls more than anything. A re-skim over sound plaster costs a lot less than hacking off, reboarding and skimming from scratch. Rather than quote blind, we look at the job and give you a free written quote, usually within 48 hours, so you know the full price before we mix a bag.

Usually, yes. If the old surface is sound and well stuck we can prep it and skim straight over, which keeps the cost and the mess down. If it's blown, damp or crumbling, skimming over it just hides the problem for a year or two. We'll check it properly and tell you which one you're dealing with before we quote.

You need to let it dry out fully first. Fresh plaster turns from dark to a pale, even colour as it dries, often around a week depending on the room, the season and how much heat and airflow it gets. Paint it too early and you seal moisture in. When we finish we'll tell you when it's safe to get the rollers out.
